Essaouira was first founded by the Carthaginian Hano who established a trading post around 5th century BC. The Portuguese King Manuel I built a fortress that named Castelo Real de Mogador in 1506. The current Essaouira was built in the 18th century by the Sultan Mohammed III whose vision is to reorient his kingdom toward the Atlantic for increased exchanges with European powers.
Moroccan Jews settled in the town and started trading with Europe to the extent that they formed 40% of the population residing the Jewish Quarter (Mellah) containing many old synagogues and large cemeteries. Essaouira has attracted artists and poets thanks to its charm. Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens made the pilgrimage to Essaouira as it served as a stop on the hippie trek from Marrakesh in the 60th and 70th. The unique climate with cooling sea breezes in the summer and warming air in winter.
